What Are The Keys to Speed Training?
There are three major keys to speed training. These keys are Building strength, Increasing power and Fine tuning mechanics.
- Strength Training:
Weak muscles equal slower speeds and less control over the body’s movements. In order to improve your speed you need to strengthen your muscles including your core muscles, as well as arm and leg muscles. The very first step and important key in speed workout training to gain overall strength.
In order to move faster the muscles involved need to be strong. Strength training also improves your agility allowing you to manuever better
- Power Training:
The second key necessary to speed training is power training. While strength is important, it will do little to improve your speed without some power behind that strength Power has been defined as the ability to provide a great deal of force quickly. Think of a runner bursting off the starting block at the beginning of the race. (or how fast a car goes from 0 to 60mph) This is what power is.
- Proper Mechanics:
The third key to speed workout training and achieving your best speed is knowing and practicing the proper mechanics for the sport or goal you are trying to achieve. No matter how much strength and power a person may have they won’t be able to improve their speed significantly unless their fine tune the mechanics of the task.
For example, a pitcher who wants to throw the ball faster may have a strong arm and be able to throw the ball hard, but they will never throw it fast if they are throwing side armed instead of using the proper pitching form. Neither will a runner increase their speed regardless of their strength or power unless they learn how to lengthen their stride and use proper running form when running a race.
