11 Best Tips On How To Get Motivated To Workout At Home

Category: Fitness Workout Tips & How-Tos

It’s hard to know how to get motivated to workout at home. Let’s face it, sometimes it’s hard to find any motivation to workout (even before many of the gyms closed during the pandemic). However, working out at home is a must for many of us right now. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t still have a successful workout.

If you’re looking for how to get motivated to workout at home, check out these tips:

1. Set up a calendar

Set up a calendar for when you want to workout and stick to it. If you don’t set aside time, life will get in the way and it will be easy to shrug off a workout of not motivated. Plus, creating a routine can help you stick to it even when you don’t feel motivated.

However, make sure to schedule a time that you can keep regularly. Think of it as an appointment and plan your days and weeks around it.

2. Create a dedicated space

Just like many people have set up an office at home, you can set up a gym at home. Create a dedicated space free of clutter, work or other responsibilities if you can. If you can find a dedicated room to set up a mini gym, even better.

Even if you have a small apartment, you can use a yoga mat as an area on your floor for your workout. And, even if you have neighbors and need to be considerate of the noise, you can find quiet workouts to do from home.

3. Reward yourself

You can also try giving yourself a real, tangible reward for hitting your exercise goals. You could choose a physical reward, self-care, or even a little treat – whatever works best for you. For instance, if you meet your daily workout reward yourself with a spa night at the end of the week. Or order yourself whatever you’ve been eying on Amazon lately for meeting your goals.

4. Pair exercise with another favorite activity

If you’re struggling to workout but find you spend a lot of time on TikTok or Netflix, maybe try pairing your workout with your screen time. Even better, if you tell yourself that you can only scroll on TikTok, or only watch Netflix while working out then you will be motivated to do it. However, this does work best if you have a treadmill, standing bike, or similar piece of workout equipment.

5. Get a (virtual) group together

One of the best ways to get over a lack of motivation is to involve other people to help you keep your goals. But you’re probably wondering how to get motivated to workout at home if you can’t have friends over.

While you may not be able to get friends to go with you to the gym, you can still create a group chat with one or a few of your friends to keep each other accountable. You can share your progress with the group and get ideas for home workouts.

Or try doing a virtual workout over Zoom, FaceTime, or any video call. That way, you can all workout at the same time and you will have to keep your workout appointment.

6. Put your goals in writing

Studies show that putting your goals in writing is one way to get motivated to workout at home. Write down your exercise goals whether it be losing weight, maintaining weight or gaining muscle.

7. Make a workout plan

One of the best ways for how to get motivated to workout at home is to make a plan and write it down. Include how frequently you want to work out, what kind of workout you will do each day, and what you will do to reward yourself if you stick to your plan. You can build rewards into your plan every day, week, month or whatever will work best to motivate you.

8. Track progress

Tracking your progress is motivating because it allows you to see how far you’ve come. An exercise journal can help you keep track of how long you worked out, how many reps you’ve done, and at what weights or resistance level. Then, you can also try to increase your intensity or length over time.

9. Track how your workouts make you feel

Do you feel better after a workout? The during may not be the most pleasant, but studies show that working out can help improve self-esteem, reduce stress, improve sleep quality and ward off anxiety and depression.

This is because working out releases endorphins which reduce your perception of pain and trigger a positive feeling. Tracking your feelings after a workout, especially compared to days when you miss a workout, is also another way for how to get motivated to workout at home.

10. Ask for advice

Starting an at-home fitness routine may feel daunting. You may not have the right equipment, or even know where to start. But you can always ask for advice from your gym, friends or experts. You can also check out some of our other articles for more advice.

Plus, during the pandemic, tons of trainers have posted free or inexpensive home workout plans and classes. You can find a ton of classes on YouTube, Instagram and more for every type of fitness level and in a variety of disciplines from yoga to HITT.

11. Follow Your Own Plan and routine

At the end of the day, how to get motivated to workout at home will mostly have to do with finding something you enjoy. Set aside a time and space, create a routine and reward yourself but if you do not enjoy the exercise you are doing, it will still be hard to stay motivated. We all have days with less motivation but following these tips will help you know how to get motivated to workout at home. Sometimes, all you need to do is get started.
